Port Adelaide to celebrate Australias first MN Day

This is the first year that Australia will join the UK in celebrating Merchant Navy Day on September 3 and Port Adelaide is leading the way.

Port Adelaide to celebrate Australias first Merchant Navy Day

With its rich maritime history, it is fitting that Port Adelaide will celebrate Australias first national Merchant Navy Day on Wednesday September 3 in nautical style.

All local families with links to the sea are being invited to assemble for the Merchant Navy Day Community Commemorative March at the Seafarers Centre at 11 am that day.

The march will start at Fishermen's Wharf Markets and go along the wharf to the back of the old Ports Building . Serving and former merchant seamen, their families, the Maritime Union of Australia and other maritime groups will march behind a Royal Australian Navy contingent. The march will conclude with a special commemoration at the superb Navigator memorial to Lost Seafarers by local sculptor Karen Genoff.

A service will be conducted by new Port Adelaide Chaplain Rev Roger Trebil**** and a light lunch will be served. In granite, lyten steel, breakwater rocks and timber, the Navigator memorial stands outside the old Ports building.

It was unveiled in 1992 for the SA Department of Marine and Harbours Port Adelaide. This sculpture is to be incorporated in a new waterfront Seafarers Memorial for Port Adelaide.

Karen Genoff is working with the Land Management Corporation in the projected removal, transport and placement of this sculpture at a waterfront site to be selected.

Port Adelaide MHR Mark Butler MP has been working on the memorial project with a Port Adelaide Seafarers Memorial Community Committee.

The Committee includes representatives from the City of Port Adelaide Enfield, Semaphore Port Adelaide RSL, Merchant Navy Association SA, Vindicatrix Association SA, the Port Centre Co-ordination Group, the South Australian Maritime Museum , Maritime Union of Australia, Port Adelaide Visitor Information Centre, National Trust Port Adelaide and Port Adelaide Historical Society.

As Minister Griffin has said, the unsung stories of Australian and Allied merchant mariners, particularly during World War II, are a unique part of Australias wartime and maritime heritage.

Merchant Navy Day provides due recognition of the service of the merchant navy in securing the Australian homeland and our region in times of war and emergency.

Extracts below from the Australian Merchant Navy website.

Australia has used merchant ships to despatch its colonial or national armed forces personnel to war-fighting or peacekeeping operations since 1885, when a New South Wales contingent went to the Sudan .

Forces from several colonies were transported to the Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902.

Post-Federation Australian forces deployed to the Boxer Rebellion 1900-1901 and to the First World War (The Great War) 1914-1918.

By far, Australias largest commitment of armed forces was to the Second World War 1939-1945, one in which, besides other menaces, the Japanese threat to Australia itself was very real.

It was in the Battle for Australia period of the Second World War that the nations merchant mariners collectively served their most extensive and dramatic role.

It was a role involving great heroism and sacrifice, to date largely unrecorded, unrecognised and unsung.

All of this has had a marked effect on the Port Adelaide Maritime Community over the years.

Veterans Affairs Minister Alan Griffin unveiled the Merchant Navy Day banner at the Port. FEDERAL Veterans Affairs Minister Alan Griffin was in the Port last Friday (July 4) to promote Australia's first annual International Merchant Navy Day march being held in September.

In the shadow of the Port lighthouse, Mr Griffin unveiled the Merchant Navy Day banner, promoting the Port Adelaide community commemorative march, which will be part of the national day of festivities on September 3.

The day recognises the service the Merchant Navy provided in securing Australia in times of war and emergency. The Merchant Navy was made up of Australia's merchant seamen masters, officers, engineers, deck and engineroom crew members who used their everyday jobs to play crucial roles in Australia's war effort from 1939 to the end of post-war tasks in the late 1940s.

Thousands carried out vital and often dangerous maritime operations, with an estimated one in eight Australians losing their lives.

On September 3, serving and former merchant seamen, their families, the Maritime Union of Australia and other maritime groups will march behind a Royal Australian Navy contingent along the Port wharf. Mr Griffin, the MP for Bruce in Victoria, was greeted by Deputy Premier Kevin Foley, Port Adelaide-Enfield Mayor Gary Johanson and Commander Craig Pritchard of the Royal Australian Navy, and merchant navy veterans.

Patrick, Port Adelaide is a very interesting place & I think you would rather like it. It is NOT a Sydney, all very flash, but it has it's own kind of charm. We also do have a PWSTS agent in that area...he thinks I am insane. (did not know my own address in Glenelg/Adelaide)

Back in the 60's I would cycle from Seaton to Port Adelaide, searching the second hand book shops for copies of 'Bulldog Drummond'. (not on Sax's best book list).
Port Adelaide is changing, getting modern.
However Patrick they still have a few bars left that would suit you and I too the ground!.

Also I have an old school friend in Port Adelaide. The school friend is also female..and not married. Yep!, I have a female friend. (it is nice when you get to a certain age that you can have for 'real' female friends).
She is going to 'attend' in September & take some pics of which I shall put up on site.
She is also 'twisting' her Dads arm to also attend, a 2nd WW soldier in the Aus army. (he will not talk about the war).

For those who rode a bike from Seaton to Port Adelaide & enjoyed a choc milk shake in Woolies of Port Adelaide

Robert, Rob, The POM, Skippy, Bob, The Mouse,  The Whip, Spotty Feet and BobO. Funny ole' world eh?

Yes I used to live in Adelaide from about the age of 8-14 yrs old, I am a "£10-00 POM" from back in the 60's. Soz' not to of mentioned it Patrick, but alot of the lads know of it, they also know of my plans for the 'great escape'.

The females name is Denese and we were in the same classes together until the ages of 13 yrs old. She only lived about 5 mins away and her Dad and mine will of known eachother from the 'Seaton Hotel' (pub). Her Dad still lives at the same house, not too well these days as he is getting on.

I had not seen Denese since I was 13 yrs old. Back in September 07 I returned to Adelaide & she came to visit me/us on my last night in Adelaide. (I also gave her the wrong address where I was staying!).
It was great to see her, also I meant to spend more time chatting. I wanted to chat with her Dad regarding my Dad (no longer with us). Sometimes there just never enough time eh?.

Denese now lives in Port Adelaide, a 40 min cycle ride from Seaton. (the cycle ride timing is for when you were younger).
Patrick, as many know 'my heart' is in Australia, not the UK & certainly not Blackpool.(get lost Stu).
I have another ole' friend in Queensland, Richard the 'Kiwi'..he is not a Kiwi, a PWSTS OLE' BOY of whom I intend to visit.

As I now have 'flu' and will be off work next week I will put up a photo of my school friends from Aus, with the help of Colin.
(chest infection and feel like hell).
The photo will be used to raise some money for PWSTS.
IE:-
1)...Pick out Bob.
2)...Pick out Denese.
3)...Pick out the very first fem that took Bob's cherry.

You must get all three correct.
If you do, I send £5-00 to PWSTS.
If you loose, you send £5-00 to the PWSTS.

Regarding No2 'pick out Denese'. I will give a hint & a fair hint.
Some of you will get No's 1 & 2, but will fail on No3.
So!, I am willing to take a chance on you guys raiding my wallet for a good cause & in this instance will be 'honest Bob'.

Let's raise a few Bob(o) for the PWSTS...wHIP
