I am hoping that someone can give me information on my uncles. William James BURNS, "Jim" born @ 1915, from Millisle, Northern Ireland, attended PWSTS at Limehouse, joined the RN, served in destroyers - Hereward perhaps- and was captured at Crete, repatriated and then served in the Merchant Navy, marrying a Portuguese girl: Lena. It is believed that he became a Master in the American Merchant Marine and transported munitions in the Vietnam War. Sadly my elderly Mother lost contact with Jim in the early 1970s and would like to get back in touch with him if he is still alive.. William Henry BURNS, "Billy", born @ 1924. also from Millisle, survived the sinking of the Empress of Britain, but was lost on the Empire Attendant in 1942, and is one of those remembered on the Memorial Plaque at Ingham. My Mother has no details but knows that her brothers were at PWSTS, presumably in the late 1930s - early 1940s, Here's hoping!
I have found two entries that relate to William James (see below). It would appear that he attended PWSTS Limehouse in 1934. A complete list of The Helm's can be found at:
Progress Reports page 13 No 41 August 1936 The Helm Magazine
Under Training No 35 August 1934 The Helm Magazine
When I have more time I will look for any details on William Henry. Does your mother have any photographs? Please feel free to send something that we can place on the web site so that we can remember them.
Sorry Dave, I havent been able to find any information in respect of William Henry BURNS. The Helm magazine, the publication of the PWSTS, appears to have stopped in 1939 and start again in 1944 (just two pages). I could be mistaken and it may just be a case of us not having received copies of these yet from old boys. However, due to war constraints I suspect that any unnecessary expeditor was avoided.
All BISS records for that period have been lost. We are told that this was due to flooding at Limehouse.
Cargo ship Empire Attendant, 7,524grt, (MOWT, A. Weir & Co. mngrs) had loaded a cargo of military vehicles and stores and sailed from Liverpool on the 1st July 1942 in the 40 ship Freetown bound Convoy OS-33. Once the Convoy had reached Freetown, the Empire Attendant was to carry onto Durban and then Karachi. On the 15th July while straggling behind the main Convoy the ship was torpedoed by U-582 South of the Canary Islands and sank in position 23 48N 21 51W. The Captain, all 49 crew and her 9 DEMS gunners were lost.

Thank you. I hope to visit the memorial at Ingham. I did research the Empire Attendant as was surprised to learn she had already been the first ship to be sunk, or at least badly damaged and beached, by aircraft in the Channel in 1940 when called the Domala. Understandable that she kept breaking down and fell out of the convoy to be picked off in 1942.
