Thank you for your initial offers of support for our Maritime Day on Tuesday 21st July 2009 at Chamberlayne College for the Arts.
I would now like to give you the following information to provide a clearer view:
Context of the day
Our college is situated close to Southampton water, the docks and the Solent. The entire local area has its origins in a centuries old maritime heritage. Our pupils however are largely unaware of this heritage and we have decided to help wake up the local community to their own history and traditions.
To do this, we hope to involve many individuals and groups and begin the process of raising awareness and lasting interest in all aspects of life and work on or near the sea.
Radio and film archives
We have already started creating fascinating programmes about the sea and the day will be the impetus for a wide range of new productions in film and sound.
Who will be there?
We anticipate there will be a large number of visitors present on the day. We will also be involving local media as much as possible as well as local universities and colleges.
What do we hope we can do on the day?
Pupils will be working on a wide variety of ways designed to develop understanding and build knowledge. As a Performing Arts College, we will be encouraging creative approaches and dynamic responses including drama, dance, music, model making, IT research, fashion design and art work.
Our college newspaper group Shout Out will be producing a special edition. A number of children will be making film and sound recordings of the day including interviewing visitors.
What will happen in the future?
We hope this day will form the beginning of long term and sustainable links with the maritime world to benefit everyone involved. We will seek to widely publicize events and new opportunities. Above all, we hope that local children of all ages will gain a positive and meaningful appreciation of their own maritime heritage and how they can continue the tradition of working on the sea.
Prizes
Pupils will be able to win prizes during the day and over the summer holiday in the following ways (any merchandise you wish to hand out will always be gratefully received some of the challenges involve fact finding and display so any literature you can offer would also be very beneficial):
