LIVERPOOL will do Sundays Merchant Navy Day proud thanks to Pat Moran and his cohorts at the Retired Merchant Navy Association who have already coaxed city property owners to fly Red Ensigns.
The National Lottery: Play Now There will be a Sunday midday service at Our Lady & St Nicholas seafarers church in Chapel Street (for a good seat be there by 11.40am).
The service will be led by Rev Peter McGrath, with bidding prayers by Canon Bob Evans, of the Mersey Mission to Seamen. Liverpool Welsh Choral Society and the Shanty Kings will provide music.
The Queens representative, Dep Lord Lieut Pamela Brown, will be escorted by Brig Bill OLeary with Lord Mayor Sharon Sullivan, Elected Mayor Joe Anderson and fellow Merseyside mayors. Brig Gen Jon Norman, of the US Air Force, will represent the US Forces Europe UK.
Diplomatic representatives will attend from Canada, Netherlands, Malta, Pakistan and Australia. Ex-pat Liverpudlian Jimmy Bray is flying over to represent Australian MN veterans.
In a secondary ceremony the Queens baton will be given to the Liverpool Battalion of the Boys Brigade in gratitude for their congratulations on HMs Diamond Jubilee.
The church service will be followed at 1.15pm by the Pier Head Ceremony with the flags of participating nations flying. Liverpool Boys Brigade will sound the reveille and last post. The service will coincide with the Irish Sea Tall Ships Regatta parade of sail in the river.
Southport Town Hall will fly the Red Ensign from Friday thanks to the efforts of Mike Davies, ex-Cunard Line.
