PLYMOUTH threw open its gates to the Merchant Navy and the Royal Navy Reserve today when the council gave them the Freedom of the City. Council leader Vivien Pengelly said the honour allowed the organisations to march into the city with drums beating, colours flying and bayonets fixed. Tudor Evans, who seconded the motion at a meeting of Plymouth City Council, said it was an honour that was quite rightly rarely conferred. The Royal Marines, the the Royal Navy and the Army have all previously been granted the Freedom of the City.
