I have today returned from Liverpool (my home town) where I visited the Merseyside Maritime Museum. While I think that Liverpool City Council have done a magnificent job in producing a museum of great beauty and history I feel that they have `missed the boat` in the fact that Liverpool was first and foremost a merchant port and that its Naval connections were a secondary consideration. Whilst no insignificance could ever be placed on Liverpool as a port for support during the world wars I believe that we should recognise Liverpool as a pioneer for trade between Great Britain and the United States of America and beyond.
Whilst I was impressed with the displays within the museum I was also dissappointed that the merchant navy did not receive the recognition it deserved.
Thanks for the update Paul. I havent had the pleasure but I know the Sailors Society were/are looking at the possibilities of exhibiting MN material at Liverpool instead of Greenwich. Hopefully it will improve, especially if we can convince the museum to take on PWSTS material and information!
