Northern Star

I sailed to Southampton from Sydney in Oct/Nov 1972 via the Panama Canal. I would love to connect with other passengers or crew who were on the ship. I would love to be able to find any folks who also travelled to Southampton on the Northern Star in December 1972. It was a great experience for me as a young nurse going to England for my first overseas trip.

i never sailed on them but i knew them well,slow starvation and agoney thay were known as ,6 month trips and no overtime .not for me.mike

Update from Anne

A few photos which may jog some memories perhaps. I have been listening to a tape I made on the 2nd December 1972 which was the day that the Northern Star was going through the Panama Canal. It was also the day that Gough Whitlam and the Labor Party won the Australian Federal Election. I would love to have any memories of the voyage and photos of the Northern Star.

sailed in PERSIC end 60 mid 61,1st trip deckboy,lower than ships cat,also CORINTHIC 61,when cming to oz as passenger on ARAWA.

An unusual request but non the less probably of interest to someone with a connection:

I collect early postcards & postal history not maritime memorabilia but have a book which may well be of interest to someone with a connection to the Shaw, Savilles & Albion Line. I found a link to your web site & would appreciate any help in trying to find someone who would be interested in having the book.

The book was presented to Capt John Stuart SS Arawa (Shaw, Saville & Albion Line) in 1892.

This ties in with the sailing from London 18 Feb 1892, Plymouth 21 Feb, Tenerife, Capetown & Hobart. 58 passengers for NZ, arriving Wellington 6 Apr 1892.

My research shows a R.W. Campbell on the Arawa departing Lyttleton for London via Rio de Janeiro on 30 April 1892. Capt Stuart made regular runs on the London - NZ circuit as master of the Arawa.

The book is of good quality & condition although not an exciting read. It is Philip Sidney (Heroes of the Nations) printed & bound by The Knickerbocker Press, New York, 1891. I will also send the results of my research on the Arawa.

I am not a book dealer and I appreciate that the PWSTS is not a agency for selling books. However, if you are able to pass on this information I would be very grateful. I think £30 would be a reasonable price to the right person.
