The Sailors Society is hosting its first Skydive event on Saturday 25th July 2009 at Brackley Airfield, near Oxford .
 
You will have the opportunity to freefall at over 120mph and jump from 10,000 feet; in tandem with a professional instructor.
 
To take part in this opportunity of a lifetime we ask that you raise a minimum of £395 for the Society- this will cover your jump costs and raise vital funds for the Societys work.
The Sailors' Society provides a personal lifeline for seafarers. Through a worldwide network of Port Chaplains and Seafarers' Centres in almost 100 ports in 30 countries, the Society offers seafarers practical help and welfare, spiritual support, financial assistance and family liaison."
 
Everyone is welcome to take part in this event; colleagues, friends and family. It promises to be a fantastic day and, having completed a jump myself, I can assure you it is a truly amazing experience.

Careers at Sea Ambassadors
 
It is almost 2 years ago since I approached the Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB) and others to get together and produce good quality material to support promoting Careers at Sea to the younger generation.
 
At long last this has materialised.
 
The Careers at Sea Ambassadors Programme began as a pilot project, to produce a standardised, quality presentation and resources for use with different audiences to raise the awareness of the excellent education, training and career opportunities within the Merchant Navy. The resources are currently being tested in a number of settings around the country and should be available to any potential Ambassadors by Autumn 2009.
 
Who are Careers at Sea Ambassadors?
Ambassadors are volunteers from the shipping industry who are interested in meeting young people at school or through youth groups in their local area to raise their awareness of Merchant Navy career opportunities and to encourage them to find out more about the education and training available to them.  It is anticipated that volunteers will have their own contacts in their local area but the MNTB can provide some assistance.

What do Careers at Sea Ambassadors do?
Ambassadors can attend schools, youth groups or other local community groups and deliver the Careers at Sea presentation as an individual talk or at a special careers event or within a classroom setting ie PSHE/Careers lessons. There are many ways in which an Ambassador can start spreading the word about the Merchant Navy and we hope that by using the presentation resources provided this will open up more opportunities.
 
All Ambassadors will be provided with a presentation that contains video clips, quiz questions and exciting and entertaining information about the Merchant Navy and the careers, education and training opportunities available and how to access them. The Presentation itself is very flexible and can be adapted to suit the audience and the ambassador.
 
The key messages about the Merchant Navy that are promoted through the presentation are:- The Merchant Navy is of vital economic importance to the UK economy and to our everyday lives.
 
There are world class education and training programmes for navigation (deck), engineering and electro-technical roles with a fully paid for degree, National Diploma or National Certificate plus a salary/training allowance.
 
There are unequalled travel opportunities with the chance to travel the world at someone else's expense.
 
The chance to gain exciting responsibility at an early age, with excellent salary prospects Stimulating and varied work using the latest technology on a wide range of modern hi-tech ships
There is a varied range of professional occupations ashore and in the wider maritime sector for those with seafaring expertise and certification including ships surveyor, shore based ship manager, ship broker, technical superintendent, maritime lawyer.
