MEDAL Admiral The Right Honourable Lord West of Spithead presented Professor Mike Barnett with his award

STUDYING the effects of watchkeeping fatigue has earned this university professor a prestigious medal.

Professor Mike Barnett received the Merchant Navy Medal for services to marine safety after his study on fatigue.

He was presented the award by Admiral Lord Alan West a few days ago at a ceremony in London.

Prof Barnett was the project director for Project Horizon, which looked at seafarer fatigue.

It was a joint venture between Southampton Solent Universitys Warsash Maritime Academy, where Prof Barnett is the head of of maritime research, and other companies around Europe.

The Merchant Navy Medal is an annual award recognising acts of courage afloat or commendable service within the merchant navy or fishing fleet.

The project analysed experienced watchkeepers use of ships bridge, engine and liquid cargo handling simulators.
