Members assistance requested please:

If you are able to assist this lady in her research regarding her grandfather who attended the PWSTS I would be grateful if you could please either email her direct on  roz.davis@ucl.ac.uk
or alternatively place a reply on the forum. I will provide Rosalyn with the link to this page. Thank you.

'I don't know whether you will be able to tell me much but perhaps you might be able to give me ideas where else I could go for information.

My recently deceased Grandfather, Albert James Carley (Bert), DoB 19 March 1919 attended the PWSTS before his first sea posting with the Merchant Navy (he was drafted into the Royal Navy on the outbreak of WWII but I believe returned to the Merchant Navy after the war ended). I
have found amongst his possessions a set of naval signal flags - not clear whether they are Merchant or Royal Navy - minus Ensign, Jack and another called Burg (not sure what this is - we thought ship's flag?) which I assume were retained by whichever ship he got them from.

I am really looking for any information on my Grandfather which PWSTS has access to, and also any ideas as to how and why he has a set of signal flags which look as though they were taken from a ship. I do hope that you will be able to give me an idea of where I should go to get
this information!'

With thanks in advance
Rosalyn Davis

We've had a stroke of luck in as much as confirming that Albert was indeed trained at the Prince of Wales Sea Training Hostel at Limehouse in London.

In Volume V No. 47 August 1938 of 'The Helm' he is mentioned on page 13, Progress and Reports. The entry, although very short, states:

A.J Carey (Dover No 1080) has transferred from "Llandaff Castle" to "Durham Castle" as O/S.

Can anyone assist with ID of the flags?
